Kiitos kaikille avuliaille kuvaajille! Huomenna on jo uusikuu, Lohikäärmeen vuosi, uudet tuulet ja toiveet...

When I stepped out from my studio on Harakka somebody was already chirping in the birch tree. He or she had spring in mind, even though winter has hardly begun, at least if we measure it by the freezing of the sea. The sea is still open but the mild northeast wind had found some ice floes somewhere and pressed them tightly onto the shore so that I almost got stuck with my little boat. There is plenty of snow and the landscape is soft and white. I found a couple of new small junipers reaching out from the snow. They are visible at this time when the colour green is scarce. Besides conifers and some green dust bins only the strange camouflage curtain on the walls of the bird shed is evergreen. - This was my last official visit to the juniper. Today the year of the rabbit ends and this blog ends here as well. Many thanks to all generous photographers! Tomorrow is new moon, the new year of the dragon, with new winds and wishes...

The juniper stands in the snow somehow spread out; it looks tired. The sky is grey; the sea is grey, still open though; the cliffs are slippery with snow and ice. I notised I have visited the juniper only 40 times although there are 52 weeks in the year. Apparently I have spent long times travelling, both during the summer and now at Christmas. Next Sunday is the last Sunday in the year of the rabbit and thus my last meeting with the juniper as well. Of course I will probably see it many times when passing by, but this ritualistic and repeated visit will end. There were visitors in my neighbour's studio today. One of them was fascinated by the relationship of inside and outside in the house and photographed the wintery view from the window, like an image for meditation.
Tuore lumipeite ja sumu muuttavat maiseman valkoiseksi. Katajakin on valean kuuran peitossa. Onneksi talossa on lämmintä, toistaiseksi maakaasun voimalla.

Winter arrived suddenly. The fresh snow cover and the fog turn the landscape white. The juniper is covered in white frost as well. It looks and feels almost strange after a break of three weeks. Hare tracks lead here and there in the snow and the planks to the bird shed lie topsy turvy after the storm. The biggest news is the small windmill, however, which stands at the western cliffs and turns in the cold northeastern wind. I had forgotten how raw and cold even a modest frost is at sea. Fortunately it is warm inside the house, so far powered by gas. The wind mill is small and pretty and does not make noice, it is quite different from the large monsters in the archipelago. I wonder whether it really produces energy...

Tämän sunnuntain vietän vielä kaukomailla kosteassa helteessä muutamien outojen joulukuusien ja lukuisten palmupuiden seurassa, mutta ensi sunnuntaina pääsen taas tapaamaan katajaystävääni Harakassa. Jäniksen vuosi vaihtuu lohikäärmeen vuodeksi vasta tammikuun 23 päivänä, joten ehdimme toivottavasti tavata vielä useamman kerran, mikäli sää sallii. Suoraan sanoen en kyllä kaipaa täältä kylmään ja koleaan pimeyteen Helsinkiin. Lisään tähän lähikuvan täkäläisen joulukuusen sulkia muistuttavista oksista illansuussa, ilman jouluvaloja ja koristeita. Mielessään siihen voi liittää myös sirkkojen sirityksen.
Happy New Year 2012 to all junipers and friends of junipers, and to all the people of Harakka and their friends! This Sunday I am still spending far away, overseas, in humid and hot weather, among some strange Christmas trees and plenty of palm trees, but next Sunday I will again be able to visit my juniper friend on Harakka. The year of the rabbit will change into the year of the dragon only on 23 January, so we can hopefully still meet several times, weather permitting. To be honest, I am not longing for the cold and chilly darkness of Helsinki. I add here a close up picture of the feather like branches of the local Christmas tree at dusk, without Christmas lights and decorations. In your mind you can add to it the sound of crickets.

A creature resembling a coniferous tree grows at the edge of the garden in the yoga centre. Its leaves are not needles but soft, somewhat like scales. I recognise it from previous trips to the south, but I cannot remember its name in any language. I ask around and nobody knows; finally a local man tells me that they call it a christmas tree. - According to David Abram (1996) there is an affinity between landscape and language as an incarnate medium, of speech as rhythm and expressive gestures as active sensuous presences in the material landscape. Communities accustomed to using a phonetical alphabet have lost their ability to read and understand the language of nature, the sounds of animals or the signs provided by plants, rocks and specific places. - In this small peaceful garden birds making all kinds of most varying sounds invite one to listen, they seem to have something to say all of them, as opposed to the noise of the trafic on the coast, based on a continues tooting of horns. It did keep one alert, though, and made one imagine that a serious accident was all the time at hand. As it indeed was, or is, of course, in some sense.
Etsin mielessäni Antonio Negrin (Art and Multitude 2011) sanoja, hänen ehdottaessaan kolmivaiheista matkaa kohti taiteen tuotannon tyyliä, joka soveltuisi tähän päivään.

Grey sky, grey sea, wet. After the storm there is a border of rubbish on the shore, which displayes how far the wawes have were reached. The water level is sill high, but the waves are smooth now.
I search in my my mind for the words of Antonio Negri (Art and Multitude 2011), who proposes a jouney in three stages towards a style of artistic production which can be envisaged for today. In his view the first stage involves an immersion into the infinite movement of bodies and events which surround us, from images of life to expressions of knowledge. The second stage is reflexive and presents itself as the moment of the recognition of the common. And the third, well, the first two stages are enough of a challenge for me at the moment. - This was my last visit to the juniper this year, according to the western calendar. The year of the rabbit, however, continues through January. I am leaving for a holiday trip to look for light and warmth and will return only at Epiphany. Meanwhile I will try to find something resembling a juniper to spend some time with.

I went to see the juniper already on Saturday, while the going was good, since they have promised rain for Sunday. According to the weather station in Kumpula, the wind in Helsinki was 3 m per second from northeast, which sounded ideal. At the shore, however, the situation was different. The wind seemed brisk and blew from southwest, so in the rough sea at Uuninsuu (the sound between Uunisari and Harakka) one had to work hard while rowing. The water level is high, the sea sweepes over the pier on the mainland side. To get into the boat with dry feet , one needs rubber boots. The cliff on the island at the shore next to the bird shed, where I stand before visiting the juniper, is partly under water. Soft splash around my feet sounded soothing, unlike the roar of the rouch sea reaching my ears across the island from the western shore. - There is frost on the ground and the grass, but the air is not cold. No snow yet, and no hope of ice to walk on.
A few moments ago the weather looked promising; a soft fog above a calm sea was beautiful and would not disturb rowing nor damage the camera. But now it is really raining, the wind is rising and more water is to be expected. It will be dark before the rain stops, or perhaps Monday. So the meeting is postponed until next week!

On ihana soutaa melkein sileää vedenpintaa pitkin. Lohdullista. Sunnuntaina saaressa on hiljaista, vain kuvausryhmä tekemässä dokumenttia maalarikollegasta yläkerrassa. Heitä en uskalla häiritä. Syksy muuttuu talveksi hiljalleen. Kulkiessani katajan luokse huomaan, että pienten vesilätäköiden pinta on jäässä ja huurre saa luontopolun harmaat lankut hohtamaan hopeisina.

The sun shines bright, but low, in the calm and crisp weather. And it sets early; by three o'clock the sun already colours the clouds on the horizon orange yellow. It is great to row along an almost smooth surface of water. The boaters have disappeard because the winter bridge to Uunisaari cuts off the strait. A sign has appeared on the building site by the pier; the water pipes to Suomenlinna will be ready by the 15th of May. That is comforting to know. On Sunday the island is quiet, only a film group upstairs making a documentary of a colleague. I dare not disturb them. Autumn turns slowly into winter. On my way to the juniper I notice that the surfaces of small puddles are frozen and frost gives the grey planks on the nature path a silvery glow.

If we want to define ritual behavior in a way that does not delimit it to human behavior, only, it can be defined as formalized behavior that involves two or more individuals in active and reciprocal communication; is structured, stereotyped and repetitive in occurrence over time; and results in greater coordination toward some social action, purpose or goal. (D'Aquili et al. 1979) This kind of thinking brings to mind mainly various mass, herd or group rituals that foster team spirit. According to the same old text the primary biological function of ritual behavior is to facilitate not only interorganismic but also intraorganismic coordination. Good, that I can identify in this strange ritual of mine. Perhaps, after hurrying to the juniper in a chilly wind, with gloves for the first time this autumn, I am now somehow more integrated into my environment and myself. Hopefully the juniper, too, feels more whole (if we allow this kind of humanizing) after our strange, rather one-way ritual, although we have no explicit common aim with regard to the coming of snow or anything else beyond our control.
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3766049940053459215.post-14448216073238011692011-11-06T19:06:00.002+02:002011-11-06T19:11:58.138+02:00Harmaa kaaos jatkuu - Grey Chaos ContinuesHarmaa marraskuinen sää, suhteellisen lämmin. Viime vuonna tähän aikaan taisi olla jo lunta. Saaressa

maiseman myllerrys jatkuu. Laiturin ympäristö on rakennustyömaa. Kuinkahan kauan vie aikaa ennenkuin soratie kasvaa edes osaksi umpeen?

Grey November weather, relatively warm. Last year this time there was already snow, I think. The overturning of the landscape on the island continues. The pier and its surroundings are a building site. The water pipes to the nearby islands Särkkä and Suomenlinna pass through the eastern shore of Harakka. The deep hollow is now mostly covered; there is a broad gravel road in its place. It follows the former nature path towards the bird shed and the juniper, but turns before them to the left by the old pier, and goes on strait into the sea. I wonder how long it will take for the gravel road to become at least partly overgrown?

For the first time this autumn I turned around at the shore after emptying the boat of rain water. I decided not to row to the juniper on the island. There would be no occasional passers-by, since the scheduled boat did no longer run, the sky looked sinister, there was a forecast for rain, the wind might rise, I thought I could distinguish foam on the waves in the passage between the islands, my right wrist was sore, in one word, I was afraid. I turned back, but after a few blocks I changed my mind. Why not try, if the waves where too strong I could always turn back, the main thing was to stay calm. Thus I pacified myself to go ahead. In the passage one oar jumped out of the oarlock, and my heart jumped up in my throat, but I managed to get into shelter from the wind to the island. For the return trip I decided to put on my unused but faded life jacket, a gift I received when fifty years old. Luckily there was one colleague working in the house and we decided to return to the mainland together, as it would feel safer. - For somebody rescued from an imaginary autumn storm the juniper looked green and beautiful next to the bare birch tree and the brownish rowan. Montako katajaa tarvitaan tuottamaan yhden ihmisen kuluttama vuotuinen happimäärä? Vai tuottaisiko yksi kataja happea useammallekin ihmiselle? Tuskin sentään, ellei ole kyseessä todella kookas kataja. - Näitä mietin kavutessani ylös vuorenrinnettä Kreetan saarella piikkihernepensaiden ja salvioiden ympäröimänä. Kotikatajaani pääsen katsomaan vasta viikon kuluttua, lokakuun viimeisenä sunnuntaina.

A juniper produces oxygen that a human being breathes, and while breathing humans produce carbon dioxide that is utilized by the juniper, so the collaboration between a human being and a juniper (any tree or plant really) tends to go fine. But what is the relationship between production and consumption? How many junipers are needed to produce the oxygen consumed yearly by a human being? Or could one juniper produce oxygen for several humans? Probably not, unless the juniper is really large. - Such thoughts came to my mind while climbing up a mountain slope on the island of Crete, surrounded by shrubs of sage and gorse. My home juniper I will see only next week, on the last Sunday in October.
Kuinkahan vanha katajaystäväni on? Rungon paksuuden perusteella varmaan ainakin sata vuotta.
... you fall into the juniper (Finnish proverb). - How blind can one be. For the first time today I noticed a completely dead juniper near to the familiar juniper. I recognised it as a juniper only from the trunk, since it has been dead for several years. At the same time I wondered why the two other junipers growing nearby have no berries, when my familiar juniper is full of them. I learned that the juniper is dioecious, that is, the pistils and the stamen grow on different individuals. My familiar juniper is a female juniper, while the two pillar like junipers nearby are males. I also learned that junipers can grow very old, in some cases a thousand years old. I wonder how old my juniper friend is? On the basis of the thickness of its trunk I would say at least one hundred years. So I have not at all treated the juniper with due respect.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3766049940053459215.post-38410292040603150222011-10-09T17:02:00.009+03:002011-10-15T17:22:25.356+03:00Etäisyys ja läheisyys - Distance and Proximity

Landscape involves many kinds of tensions, already the concept of landscape does. According to John Wylie (2007) one of them is the question of distance and proximity. On one hand landscape presumes distance, it is a technique for looking from afar, where the viewer sees through viewing conventions parts of the environment as a landscape. On the other hand landscape is necessarily lived and experienced, we cannot get outside of it, we live embedded in it, in the world. I thought about that tension today, when I spent a moment with the juniper alone, without witnesses. Actually my performance contains both dimensions of that tension. When placing the camera I utilize the distance it creates, and use it to frame a part of the environment as a landscape. When I go to the juniper, close, in the middle of it, I am part of the landscape and sense it. I no longer see the landscape but details, lights and shadows, the abundance of berries. I hear they ripen and turn blue in three years. - Next week I visit the juniper on Saturday; will the sun still feel warm?
Villimies saaressa (Aaron Williamson), tietokoneohjelmoitu pyöräretki yössä (Blast Theory) tai facebook ystäviään yleisön avulla karsiva nuorukainen (Brian Lobel) tarjosivat kiinnostavia kokemuksia. Niihin verrattuna seisominen katajan kanssa käsikkäin on melko tavanomaista touhua. Kuuluisan Kuopion torin kohdalla ammottava kuoppa voittaa kyllä vaikuttavuudellaan kaikki hienovaraisemmat yritykset elävöittää kaupunkitilaa. Siihen verrattuna Harakan itärannan railo on vaatimaton.

I arrived to the juniper directly from Kuopio, where the ANTI festival celebrated its 10th anniversary http://www.antifestival.com/2011/eng/. A wild man on the island (Aaron Wlliamson), a computer directed bicycle tour in the night (Blast Theory) or a talkative youth pruning his facebook friends with the help of the audience (Brian Lobel), provided interesting experiences. To stand hand in hand with a juniper seems, in comparison, a rather customary affair. The huge pit yawning in place of the famous Kuopio market square beats in its impressiveness all subtler attempts at enlivening urban space. The crack on the eastern shore of Harakka is modest in comparison. So far the juniper, displaying its excessive, still raw harvest of berries in the cooling autumn, seems unaffected by it.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3766049940053459215.post-58988081303149363012011-09-25T16:35:00.003+03:002011-10-02T16:13:44.891+03:00Kiertotietä katajan luokse - Detour to the JuniperKaivinkoneet ovat katkaisseet tien katajan luokse.

Excavators have blocked off the path to the juniper. There is now a deep groove in place of the road, the trees are cut down except for one birch and a heap of macadam fills the site where I used to video film the view over the bay and the bird shed towards the Old Räntty island. The path continues as before after the heap, as if nothing had happened. But the deep excavation changes the scale of the landscape; it is no loger easy to see what has been where. I recognised a sprig that used to meander on the ground below the birch. Now it grows on top of a gravel ridge. Obviously many things can happen to a stationary being, too. - One can reach the juniper through a detour, however, by turning right and walking over the cliffs. And admire the blue pipes, which are striking in the autumn landscape in their own way, and probably not there on display for long either.

Open doors day in the artists' house; each stop of the scheduled boat brings a new stream of curious visitors. There is a temporary café on the second floor, Mari Rogers organized a poetry walk and I held hands with the juniper at three o'clock as usual. The big surprise was not the amount of people but the uprooted terrain, the result of large scale plumbing work; toppled trees and large pipes lying along the cleared path on the eastern shore. Different things catch the eye of the first time visitor and the one who spends time here regularly. I am staring at the conspicuous big bright blue pipes that have appeared since last week. But I have never noticed that an alder near the juniper grows in the form of a tuning fork.
Seinien muistiinpanoista silmiini osuu Energiaskenaariot 2050.

The Association for Nature Conservation is having a meeting on the island; among the notes on the walls I notice Energy scenarios 2050. I shrink back at the thought of time passing and respect people who have the energy to think ahead. - Outdoors the birches, alders, bird cherries, rowans and willows are still green. Here and there a few yellow leaves lie on the ground, and half of a bird cherry growing on the eastern cliff is already dark crimson. The stems of rosebay willowherbs and goldenrods stick out as dry tussocks recalling autumn, although the soil is damp and abounds in many kinds of mushrooms. Some brittlegills grow at the foot of the juniper; crimson hoods of tiny gnomes crouch there sheltered next to each other. The bird shed, perhaps more suitable for human size, has a proscenium-like opening, which crops the juniper out of the view, revealing only bare cliffs. Not even bird droppings in sight. Nor a clue of future scenarios.

Lots of traffic at sea but quiet on the island. This Sunday only the old painter and me were working in the artists' house, I think. Of course the last warm days are best spent outdoors. While visiting the juniper I realized how the sun is now at three o'clock in the afternoon much lower than during the summer. It dazzles your eyes and throws longer shadows. - I heard that the boats on the cliff next to the pier must be moved away due to work with water pipes that involves transfer of soil. My old boat has been out of use for several years but I thought it could still be repaired. A forlorn hope, when turned over rainwater spurted from a hole in the bottom. If put at sea it would sink immediately.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3766049940053459215.post-62828146394298252722011-08-27T22:05:00.012+03:002011-08-31T09:56:54.379+03:00Seilin saaren korkeat katajat - The Tall Junipers of Seili IslandSaaristomeren tutkimuslaitoksen ympäristö Seilin saarella on täynnä kauniita katajia. On vaikea valita kenen kanssa tekisi lähempää tuttavuutta. Puisen museokirkon vieressä kasvava vanha kataja, joka seisoo itsekseen nurmella, hiukan kirkkoon päin kallellaan, tuntuu luontevalta valinnalta. Se on varmasti nähnyt saaren viimeisen lepratautisen asukkaan ja myöhemmin monet mielisairaina hoidetut naiset puhumattakaan kaikista viime vuosien vierailijoista. Sitä ei voi ohittaa tervehtimättä.

The surroundings of the Archipelago Research Institute on the island of Seili are full of beautiful junipers. It is difficult to choose which one of them I should try to become acquainted with. The old juniper growing next to the wooden museum church that stands alone on the lawn, leaning slightly towards the church, seems an obvious choice. It has surely seen the last inhabitant with leprosy and later the many women treated as mental patients as well as all the visitors in recent years. I could not pass by it without greeting.
Kun palasin katajan luota he olivat jo kaukana. Oli silti hauskaa tulla nähdyksi.

After a weeks break and the humid heat of Osaka, the cool wind from the East felt really fresh. I had already accepted the fact that the juniper and I would not have any audience this time, when I heard a clear child's voice from the path behind me. I could not distinguish the words, only the surprised and inquiring tone. I do not know whether the child saw the strange figure by the juniper or whether the camera and the basket on the cliff next to the sign astonished the family passing by. When I returned from the juniper they were already far ahead. It was nevertheless nice to be seen.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0
