Lokit ja hanhet hautomassa - Seagulls and Geese Hatching

Äitienpäivän kunniaksi monet lokit ja hanhet istuvat jo hautomassa. Katajan juurella ei onneksi ole pesää. Yksi hanhipariskunta oli asettautunut lähelle, mutta onneksi viereisen koivun toiselle puolelle. Herätin heissä epäluuloa, mutten varsinaisia puolustusreaktioita. Katajan luona seisoessa oli hauska havaita, että ajoittain puhkeavat mekkalat eivät johtuneet minusta vaan lokkien keskinäisestä reviirinahistelusta. Kataja tuntuu jo suurelta ja turvalliselta, sen viereen voi suojautua. Ja jos oikein tukalaksi käy, pääsee aina lintupiiloon.

To honour Mother's Day many seagulls and geese are already sitting and hatching. Luckily there is no nest under the juniper. One geese couple has settled rather close, though fortunately on the other side of the nearby birch. I provoked their suspicion but no serious defense reactions. While standing by the juniper it was nice to notice how occasional uproars among the seagulls were not caused by me, but rather by territorial scraps between them.The juniper seems already big and secure, something to seek shelter by. And in case of emergency there is always the shelter for bird watching.

Vappuhulinan vieressä - Next to the May Day Hullabaloo

Kaivopuiston kallioille levittäytyneiden vappujuhlijoiden musiikki kaikuu saaressa kylmän koillistuulen kantamana. Olin unohtanut päivittää esitystiedot presentaation kalenteriin, enkä ollut kutsunut ketään kolleega todistajaksi, joten arvasin että saisin viettää hetkeni katajan kanssa kaksistaan. Keitin kuitenkin jasmiiniteetä termokseen, enemmän periaatteen vuoksi kuin lämmikkeeksi mahdollisille vieraille. Tuulen myötä on yllättävän kylmä. Linnut olivat poikkeuksellisen rauhallisia. Vielä ei katajan lähistöllä ole mitään selkeitä pesän pohjia.

The music of the May Day parties on the cliffs of Kaivopuisto Park reverberates through the island carried by the cold wind from Northeast. I had forgotten to update performance information on the presentaatio website and I had not invited any colleague to witness, so I guessed I would have my moment with the juniper alone. I did make some jasmin tea in a termos, more for the sake of principle than to warm possible visitors. It is surprisingly cold due to the wind. The birds were unusually calm. So far there are no marks of future nests next to the juniper.

Ei jälkeäkään lumesta - No traces of Snow

Kataja on vihdoinkin täysin vapaa talvipeitteestään. Kaikki maan pintaa myötäilevät oksatkin ovat nyt irti lumesta. Lumi peitti ne niin tyystin, että olen tietämättäni kävellyt niiden päällä. Nyt ei harjalla ollut enää töitä. Kauempaa kataja näyttää riutuneelta ja rupsahtaneelta, mutta läheltä näkee että se on vehreä ja voimissaan. Nyt saatoin pitää kiinni tukevammasta oksasta ja tuntui kuin se olisi huojunut hiljaa.

The juniper is finally completely free of its winter cover. All the branches creeping on the ground are now free of snow. They were so completely covered by snow that I have unknowingly stept on them. Now there was no more job for the brush. From a distance the juniper looks wilted and withered, but closer you can see how green and strong it is. Now I could hold on to a sturdy branch and it seemed to be swaying gently.

Tapaamisiin maanantaina? - See you on Monday?

Pääsiäisen johdosta vierailen seuraavan kerran katajan luona maanantaina 25.4. klo 15.00 (en siis tällä kertaa sunnuntaina). Toivottavasti tapaamme silloin? 

Due to Easter holidays I will visit the juniper next time on Monday 25th of April at 3 pm (not on Sunday this time). Hope to see you then?

Lintujen aika - Season of the Birds

Kahdessa viikossa ehtii tapahtua paljon. Suurin osa lumesta on sulanut ja linnut ovat saapuneet. Yksittäisiä hanhipariskuntia käyskentelee lokkien ja tiirojen joukossa. Vielä niitä ei tarvitse varoa, mutta meteli on melkoinen. Merellä kevät on aina myöhässä sisämaahan verrattuna. Itärannalla on vielä isoja jäälauttoja, mutta kalliot ovat paljaana. Maisema on muuttunut entiselleen. Katajakin on päässyt esiin lumen alta.Vain alimmat oksat ovat vielä kiinni jäätyneessä lumessa. Yksi oksista oli murtunut lumen voimasta. Paljon pieniä vihreitä neulasia oli varissut katajan ympärille lumeen. Olisivatko linnut olleet syömässä marjoja, vai mistä moinen neulassade?

In two weeks much can happen. Most of the snow has melted and the birds have arrived. Couples of geese stroll among the seagulls and terns. You need not watch out for them, yet, but the noice is remarkable. At sea the spring is always later than on the mainland. There are huge ice flakes on the eastern shore, but the rocks are bare. The landscape has returned to normal. The juniper, too, has emerged from the snow. Only the lowest branches are still stuck in the icy snow. One branch was broken due to the force of the ice. Lots of small green needles were shed in the snow around the juniper. Perhaps some birds have been eating the berries, why else such a spray of needles?
