Kuvitteellinen syysmyrsky - Imaginary Autumn Storm

For the first time this autumn I turned around at the shore after emptying the boat of rain water. I decided not to row to the juniper on the island. There would be no occasional passers-by, since the scheduled boat did no longer run, the sky looked sinister, there was a forecast for rain, the wind might rise, I thought I could distinguish foam on the waves in the passage between the islands, my right wrist was sore, in one word, I was afraid. I turned back, but after a few blocks I changed my mind. Why not try, if the waves where too strong I could always turn back, the main thing was to stay calm. Thus I pacified myself to go ahead. In the passage one oar jumped out of the oarlock, and my heart jumped up in my throat, but I managed to get into shelter from the wind to the island. For the return trip I decided to put on my unused but faded life jacket, a gift I received when fifty years old. Luckily there was one colleague working in the house and we decided to return to the mainland together, as it would feel safer. - For somebody rescued from an imaginary autumn storm the juniper looked green and beautiful next to the bare birch tree and the brownish rowan. And nearby the old trunks of bird cherries warped gloomily.

Montako katajaa ihminen tarvitsee? - How Many Junipers Does One Human Need?

Montako katajaa tarvitaan tuottamaan yhden ihmisen kuluttama vuotuinen happimäärä? Vai tuottaisiko yksi kataja happea useammallekin ihmiselle? Tuskin sentään, ellei ole kyseessä todella kookas kataja. - Näitä mietin kavutessani ylös vuorenrinnettä Kreetan saarella piikkihernepensaiden ja salvioiden ympäröimänä. Kotikatajaani pääsen katsomaan vasta viikon kuluttua, lokakuun viimeisenä sunnuntaina.

A juniper produces oxygen that a human being breathes, and while breathing humans produce carbon dioxide that is utilized by the juniper, so the collaboration between a human being and a juniper (any tree or plant really) tends to go fine. But what is the relationship between production and consumption? How many junipers are needed to produce the oxygen consumed yearly by a human being? Or could one juniper produce oxygen for several humans? Probably not, unless the juniper is really large. - Such thoughts came to my mind while climbing up a mountain slope on the island of Crete, surrounded by shrubs of sage and gorse. My home juniper I will see only next week, on the last Sunday in October.

Joka kuuseen kurkottaa... - If you reach for the spruce...

Kuinkahan vanha katajaystäväni on? Rungon paksuuden perusteella varmaan ainakin sata vuotta.

... you fall into the juniper (Finnish proverb). - How blind can one be. For the first time today I noticed a completely dead juniper near to the familiar juniper. I recognised it as a juniper only from the trunk, since it has been dead for several years. At the same time I wondered why the two other junipers growing nearby have no berries, when my familiar juniper is full of them. I learned that the juniper is dioecious, that is, the pistils and the stamen grow on different individuals. My familiar juniper is a female juniper, while the two pillar like junipers nearby are males. I also learned that junipers can grow very old, in some cases a thousand years old. I wonder how old my juniper friend is? On the basis of the thickness of its trunk I would say at least one hundred years. So I have not at all treated the juniper with due respect.

Etäisyys ja läheisyys - Distance and Proximity

Landscape involves many kinds of tensions, already the concept of landscape does. According to John Wylie (2007) one of them is the question of distance and proximity. On one hand landscape presumes distance, it is a technique for looking from afar, where the viewer sees through viewing conventions parts of the environment as a landscape. On the other hand landscape is necessarily lived and experienced, we cannot get outside of it, we live embedded in it, in the world. I thought about that tension today, when I spent a moment with the juniper alone, without witnesses. Actually my performance contains both dimensions of that tension. When placing the camera I utilize the distance it creates, and use it to frame a part of the environment as a landscape. When I go to the juniper, close, in the middle of it, I am part of the landscape and sense it. I no longer see the landscape but details, lights and shadows, the abundance of berries. I hear they ripen and turn blue in three years. - Next week I visit the juniper on Saturday; will the sun still feel warm?

Raivaus jatkuu - Clearance Continues

Tulin katajan luokse suoraan Kuopiosta, kymmenvuotista taivaltaan juhlivalta ANTI-festivaalilta http://www.antifestival.com/2011/fin/. Villimies saaressa (Aaron Williamson), tietokoneohjelmoitu pyöräretki yössä (Blast Theory) tai facebook ystäviään yleisön avulla karsiva nuorukainen (Brian Lobel) tarjosivat kiinnostavia kokemuksia. Niihin verrattuna seisominen katajan kanssa käsikkäin on melko tavanomaista touhua. Kuuluisan Kuopion torin kohdalla ammottava kuoppa voittaa kyllä vaikuttavuudellaan kaikki hienovaraisemmat yritykset elävöittää kaupunkitilaa. Siihen verrattuna Harakan itärannan railo on vaatimaton.

I arrived to the juniper directly from Kuopio, where the ANTI festival celebrated its 10th anniversary http://www.antifestival.com/2011/eng/. A wild man on the island (Aaron Wlliamson), a computer directed bicycle tour in the night (Blast Theory) or a talkative youth pruning his facebook friends with the help of the audience (Brian Lobel), provided interesting experiences. To stand hand in hand with a juniper seems, in comparison, a rather customary affair. The huge pit yawning in place of the famous Kuopio market square beats in its impressiveness all subtler attempts at enlivening urban space. The crack on the eastern shore of Harakka is modest in comparison. So far the juniper, displaying its excessive, still raw harvest of berries in the cooling autumn, seems unaffected by it.
