Ei esitystä, sataa liiaksi - No Performance, Too Much Rain

A few moments ago the weather looked promising; a soft fog above a calm sea was beautiful and would not disturb rowing nor damage the camera. But now it is really raining, the wind is rising and more water is to be expected. It will be dark before the rain stops, or perhaps Monday. So the meeting is postponed until next week!

Aurinkoinen marraskuu - Sunny November

On ihana soutaa melkein sileää vedenpintaa pitkin. Lohdullista. Sunnuntaina saaressa on hiljaista, vain kuvausryhmä tekemässä dokumenttia maalarikollegasta yläkerrassa. Heitä en uskalla häiritä. Syksy muuttuu talveksi hiljalleen. Kulkiessani katajan luokse huomaan, että pienten vesilätäköiden pinta on jäässä ja huurre saa luontopolun harmaat lankut hohtamaan hopeisina.

The sun shines bright, but low, in the calm and crisp weather. And it sets early; by three o'clock the sun  already colours the clouds on the horizon orange yellow. It is great to row along an almost smooth surface of water. The boaters have disappeard because the winter bridge to Uunisaari cuts off the strait. A sign has appeared on the building site by the pier; the water pipes to Suomenlinna will be ready by the 15th of May. That is comforting to know. On Sunday the island is quiet, only a film group upstairs making a documentary of a colleague. I dare not disturb them. Autumn turns slowly into winter. On my way to the juniper I notice that the surfaces of small puddles are frozen and frost gives the grey planks on the nature path a silvery glow.

Kummallinen rituaali - Strange Ritual

If we want to define ritual behavior in a way that does not delimit it to human behavior, only, it can be defined as formalized behavior that involves two or more individuals in active and reciprocal communication; is structured, stereotyped and repetitive in occurrence over time; and results in greater coordination toward some social action, purpose or goal. (D'Aquili  et al. 1979) This kind of thinking brings to mind mainly various mass, herd or group rituals that foster team spirit. According to the same old text the primary biological function of ritual behavior is to facilitate not only interorganismic but also intraorganismic coordination. Good, that I can identify in this strange ritual of mine. Perhaps, after hurrying to the juniper in a chilly wind, with gloves for the first time this autumn, I am now somehow more integrated into my environment and myself. Hopefully the juniper, too, feels more whole (if we allow this kind of humanizing) after our strange, rather one-way ritual, although we have no explicit common aim with regard to the coming of snow or anything else beyond our control.

Harmaa kaaos jatkuu - Grey Chaos Continues

Harmaa marraskuinen sää, suhteellisen lämmin. Viime vuonna tähän aikaan taisi olla jo lunta. Saaressa
maiseman myllerrys jatkuu. Laiturin ympäristö on rakennustyömaa. Kuinkahan kauan vie aikaa ennenkuin soratie kasvaa edes osaksi umpeen?

Grey November weather, relatively warm. Last year this time there was already snow, I think. The overturning of the landscape on the island continues. The pier and its surroundings are a building site. The water pipes to the nearby islands Särkkä and Suomenlinna pass through the eastern shore of Harakka. The deep hollow is now mostly covered; there is a broad gravel road in its place. It follows the former nature path towards the bird shed and the juniper, but turns before them to the left by the old pier, and goes on strait into the sea. I wonder how long it will take for the gravel road to become at least partly overgrown?

Kuvitteellinen syysmyrsky - Imaginary Autumn Storm

For the first time this autumn I turned around at the shore after emptying the boat of rain water. I decided not to row to the juniper on the island. There would be no occasional passers-by, since the scheduled boat did no longer run, the sky looked sinister, there was a forecast for rain, the wind might rise, I thought I could distinguish foam on the waves in the passage between the islands, my right wrist was sore, in one word, I was afraid. I turned back, but after a few blocks I changed my mind. Why not try, if the waves where too strong I could always turn back, the main thing was to stay calm. Thus I pacified myself to go ahead. In the passage one oar jumped out of the oarlock, and my heart jumped up in my throat, but I managed to get into shelter from the wind to the island. For the return trip I decided to put on my unused but faded life jacket, a gift I received when fifty years old. Luckily there was one colleague working in the house and we decided to return to the mainland together, as it would feel safer. - For somebody rescued from an imaginary autumn storm the juniper looked green and beautiful next to the bare birch tree and the brownish rowan. And nearby the old trunks of bird cherries warped gloomily.
