Missä lumi, missä jää? - Where is the snow, the ice?

Kävin katajan luona jo lauantaina, hyvän sään aikana, koska sunnuntaiksi on luvattu sadetta.   Kumpulan säähavaintoaseman mukaan tuuli oli Helsingissä koilisesta 3 m sekunnissa, ja se kuulosti ihanteelliselta. Rannassa tilanne oli kuitenkin toinen. Tuuli vaikutti navakalta ja se puhalsi lounaasta, joten Uuninsuun aallokossa (salmessa Uunisaaren ja Harakan välissä) oli soutajalla kiskomista. Vesi on korkealla, meri pyyhkii laiturin reunojen yli mantereen puolella. Päästäkseen veneeseen kuivin jaloin tarvitsee kumisaappaat. Saaressa rantakallio jolla seison lintupiilon vieressä ennenkuin menen katajan luokse on puoliksi veden peitossa. Pehmeä loiske jaloissa kuulosti rauhoittavalta, toisin kuin länsirannalta saaren yli kantautuva aallokon pauhu. - Maassa ja ruohossa on huurretta, vaikkei ilma ole kylmä. Ei vielä lunta, eikä toivoakaan jäästä joka kestäisi kulkea.

I went to see the juniper already on Saturday, while the going was good, since they have promised rain for Sunday. According to the weather station in Kumpula, the wind in Helsinki was 3 m per second from northeast, which sounded ideal. At the shore, however, the situation was different. The wind seemed brisk and blew from southwest, so in the rough sea at Uuninsuu (the sound between Uunisari and Harakka) one had to work hard while rowing. The water level is high, the sea sweepes over the pier on the mainland side. To get into the boat with dry feet , one needs rubber boots. The cliff on the island at the shore next to the bird shed, where I stand  before visiting the juniper, is partly under water. Soft splash around my feet sounded soothing, unlike the roar of the rouch sea reaching my ears across the island from the western shore.  - There is frost on the ground and the grass, but the air is not cold. No snow yet, and no hope of ice to walk on.
