Etäisyys ja läheisyys - Distance and Proximity

Landscape involves many kinds of tensions, already the concept of landscape does. According to John Wylie (2007) one of them is the question of distance and proximity. On one hand landscape presumes distance, it is a technique for looking from afar, where the viewer sees through viewing conventions parts of the environment as a landscape. On the other hand landscape is necessarily lived and experienced, we cannot get outside of it, we live embedded in it, in the world. I thought about that tension today, when I spent a moment with the juniper alone, without witnesses. Actually my performance contains both dimensions of that tension. When placing the camera I utilize the distance it creates, and use it to frame a part of the environment as a landscape. When I go to the juniper, close, in the middle of it, I am part of the landscape and sense it. I no longer see the landscape but details, lights and shadows, the abundance of berries. I hear they ripen and turn blue in three years. - Next week I visit the juniper on Saturday; will the sun still feel warm?

Raivaus jatkuu - Clearance Continues

Tulin katajan luokse suoraan Kuopiosta, kymmenvuotista taivaltaan juhlivalta ANTI-festivaalilta http://www.antifestival.com/2011/fin/. Villimies saaressa (Aaron Williamson), tietokoneohjelmoitu pyöräretki yössä (Blast Theory) tai facebook ystäviään yleisön avulla karsiva nuorukainen (Brian Lobel) tarjosivat kiinnostavia kokemuksia. Niihin verrattuna seisominen katajan kanssa käsikkäin on melko tavanomaista touhua. Kuuluisan Kuopion torin kohdalla ammottava kuoppa voittaa kyllä vaikuttavuudellaan kaikki hienovaraisemmat yritykset elävöittää kaupunkitilaa. Siihen verrattuna Harakan itärannan railo on vaatimaton.

I arrived to the juniper directly from Kuopio, where the ANTI festival celebrated its 10th anniversary http://www.antifestival.com/2011/eng/. A wild man on the island (Aaron Wlliamson), a computer directed bicycle tour in the night (Blast Theory) or a talkative youth pruning his facebook friends with the help of the audience (Brian Lobel), provided interesting experiences. To stand hand in hand with a juniper seems, in comparison, a rather customary affair. The huge pit yawning in place of the famous Kuopio market square beats in its impressiveness all subtler attempts at enlivening urban space. The crack on the eastern shore of Harakka is modest in comparison. So far the juniper, displaying its excessive, still raw harvest of berries in the cooling autumn, seems unaffected by it.

Kiertotietä katajan luokse - Detour to the Juniper

Excavators have blocked off the path to the juniper. There is now a deep groove in place of the road, the trees are cut down except for one birch and a heap of macadam fills the site where I used to video film the view over the bay and the bird shed towards the Old Räntty island. The path continues as before after the heap, as if  nothing had happened. But the deep excavation changes the scale of the landscape; it is no loger easy to see what has been where. I recognised a sprig that used to meander on the ground below the birch. Now it grows on top of a gravel ridge. Obviously many things can happen to a stationary being, too. - One can reach the juniper through a detour, however, by turning right and walking over the cliffs. And admire the blue pipes, which are striking in the autumn landscape in their own way, and probably not there on display for long either.

Avoimet ovet ja myllerretty maasto - Open Doors and Uprooted Terrain

Open doors day in the artists' house; each stop of the scheduled boat brings a new stream of curious visitors. There is a temporary café on the second floor, Mari Rogers organized a poetry walk and I held hands with the juniper at three o'clock as usual. The big surprise was not the amount of people but the uprooted terrain, the result of large scale plumbing work; toppled trees and large pipes lying along the cleared path on the eastern shore. Different things catch the eye of the first time visitor and the one who spends time here regularly. I am staring at the conspicuous big bright blue pipes that have appeared since last week. But I have never noticed that an alder near the juniper grows in the form of a tuning fork.

Paljaat kalliot ja haperojoukko - Bare Cliffs and Some Brittlegills

Luonnonsuojeluliiton väki kokoustaa saaressa. Seinien muistiinpanoista silmiini osuu Energiaskenaariot 2050.

The Association for Nature Conservation is having a meeting on the island; among the notes on the walls I notice Energy scenarios 2050. I shrink back at the thought of time passing and respect people who have the energy to think ahead. - Outdoors the birches, alders, bird cherries, rowans and willows are still green. Here and there a few yellow leaves lie on the ground, and half of a bird cherry growing on the eastern cliff is already dark crimson. The stems of rosebay willowherbs and goldenrods stick out as dry tussocks recalling autumn, although the soil is damp and abounds in many kinds of mushrooms. Some brittlegills grow at the foot of the juniper; crimson hoods of tiny gnomes crouch there sheltered next to each other. The bird shed, perhaps more suitable for human size, has a proscenium-like opening, which crops the juniper out of the view, revealing only bare cliffs. Not even bird droppings in sight. Nor a clue of future scenarios.
