Helsinkipäivä ja hurja helle - Helsinki Day in hot weather

The island is full of people and action to celebrate Helsinki Day; the boat connection is free, there is a cafeteria in the Telegraph and all kinds of activities take place in the yard. Geese couples strut in the grass with their young. Seagull fledglings waddle here and there and hurry away from humans with the shrieks of their parents. Humans, too, walk on the paths with their young in clusters of various sizes. It seems as if the birds have calmed down when faced with such an overpowering amount of humans. One expedition after another cirle the island; one of them filled the bird shed at half past two, but continued its trip before I stepped over the border rope and entered the protected domain with the juniper. Some Spanish speaking young people came by wondering what I was doing and agreed to photograph something, this time a piece of dead nature as a contrast to the extremely living nature surrounding us. Unfortunately I noticed only later that the bird bone photographed by Eeva Warro was not saved in the camera. We have to imagine it...

Kerrankin tee kelpasi - For once tea was appreciated

Many seagulls have already their young walking around and they are really hard to distinguish on the cliffs. Only the screams tell you that something fragile and downy is moving nearby. Some kind of combat had taken place under the juniper since sticks and  pieces of brushwood were lying around in a strange manner. At the crossroads where I video film the bird shed a seagull lady still sits hatching and Mr Seagull is even more nervous than before. I held a stick high above my head while trying to focus the camera and was scared when the stick was hit by wings several times. Perhaps the horizon in the image is a bit slanting. - Occasional visitors and photographers have normally not cared much for tea, but today Virpi, who dared walk the nature path with me using a flowery umbrella as protection against the birds, sipped happily her tea while photographing a whole series of pictures.

Tuomet kukkivat jo merelläkin - The bird cherries bloom by the sea now

A fresh breeze from the west, sunny and fairly cold. Today I hurried to the island in the middle of the working day and went directly to the juniper. Normally I stand for a while by the bird shed and video film that from the path, before I move the camera and go and stand by the juniper. In that way I prepare myself for the encounter. Today, however, I reversed the action and was immediately confused. Habits are formed quickly. - There are more birds on the open side of the rope marking the area reserved for birds, or so it seems when I stand by the juniper, which grows in the middle of the birds' land. Next to it I can be at peace for a moment.

Katajan luona maanantaina - By the Juniper on Monday

Matkan vuoksi käyn katajan luona sunnuntain sijasta maanantaina 30.5. klo 15.00. Tervetuloa teelle lintupiiloon silloin. Kataja on toki tavoitettavissa sunnuntainakin.

Due to a journey I will visit the juniper not on Sunday but on Monday 30th of Mai at 3 pm. Welcome to have a cup of tea at the bird shed then. The Juniper will of course be available on Sunday as well.

Hanhet aidan takana - Geese fenced off

Kävin katajan luona tällä kertaa hiukan ennen kolmea ja vasta palatessa tapasin vanhan tutun, Raita Virkkusen, jota pyysin kuvaamaan jotakin ympäristöstä. Ja hän valitsi ikuistettavaksi - hanhen tietysti.

Sunny weather, reasonable western wind and some people on the island. The geese that have built their nests next to the path are now protected by a wire netting - at first glance it looks like a zoo. Actually the fences probably protect children trying to pass by. Several of last year's admittedly more elegant brushwood fences are in use as well. Some of the geese are nervous and always attacking, while others check calmly whether the passer-by really is only passing by. I visited the juniper a bit earlier than 3 pm this time and met an old acquaintance, Raita Virkkunen, only on return, and asked her to photograph something in the environment. And she chose to immortalize - a goose, of course.
