Havupuu vai saniainen? - Fir Tree or Fern?

Havupuun näköinen olio kasvaa joogakeskuksen puutarhan laidalla.

A creature resembling a coniferous tree grows at the edge of the garden in the yoga centre. Its leaves are not needles but soft, somewhat like scales. I recognise it from previous trips to the south, but I cannot remember its name in any language. I ask around and nobody knows; finally a local man tells me that they call it a christmas tree. - According to David Abram (1996) there is an affinity between landscape and language as an incarnate medium, of speech as rhythm and expressive gestures as active sensuous presences in the material landscape. Communities accustomed to using a phonetical alphabet have lost their ability to read and understand the language of nature, the sounds of animals or the signs provided by plants, rocks and specific places. - In this small peaceful garden birds making all kinds of most varying sounds invite one to listen, they seem to have something to say all of them, as opposed to the noise of the trafic on the coast, based on a continues tooting of horns. It did keep one alert, though, and made one imagine that a serious accident was all the time at hand. As it indeed was, or is, of course, in some sense.

Joulukuusi beachillä - Christmas Tree on the Beach

Rantakoju Mänty ja sitä ympäröivä neulasin varustettu kasvusto on lähin katajaa muistuttava minkä löydän tältä beachiltä Arabian meren rannalla. Onneksi rannalla on sentään joulupuu, täysin koristeltuna jo viikkoa etukäteen. Ensi sunnuntaina olen puutarhassa sisämaassa, ehkä siellä on enemmän pensaita kohdattavaksi. Toistaiseksi luen uusintapainosta vuonna 1988 ilmestyneestä julkaisusta Thinking Like a Mountain ja ihmettelen miksen sitä tuolloin lukenut…

The Pine Tree Beach Shack and its surrounding needled shrubs is the closest I come to a juniper here on this beach by the Arabian Sea. Luckily there is a Christmas tree on the beach, fully decorated already one week in advance. I do not feel like holding hands with it, rather I empathise with its degraded state. And I think I now understand why a woman dressed up too much is sometimes called a Christmas tree. Next Sunday I will be in a garden away from the beach; perhaps there will be more bushes to encounter. Meanwhile I read a reprint of a publication from 1988, Thinking Like a Mountain, and wonder why I did not read it back then…

Myrskyn jälkeen - After The Storm

Etsin mielessäni Antonio Negrin (Art and Multitude 2011) sanoja, hänen ehdottaessaan kolmivaiheista matkaa kohti taiteen tuotannon tyyliä, joka soveltuisi tähän päivään.

Grey sky, grey sea, wet. After the storm there is a border of rubbish on the shore, which displayes how far the wawes have were reached. The water level is sill high, but the waves are smooth now.
I search in my my mind for the words of Antonio Negri (Art and Multitude 2011), who proposes a jouney in three stages towards a style of artistic production which can be envisaged for today. In his view the first stage involves an immersion into the infinite movement of bodies and events which surround us, from images of life to expressions of knowledge. The second stage is reflexive and presents itself as the moment of the recognition of the common. And the third, well, the first two stages are enough of a challenge for me at the moment. - This was my last visit to the juniper this year, according to the western calendar. The year of the rabbit, however, continues through January. I am leaving for a holiday trip to look for light and warmth and will return only at Epiphany. Meanwhile I will try to find something resembling a juniper to spend some time with.

Missä lumi, missä jää? - Where is the snow, the ice?

Kävin katajan luona jo lauantaina, hyvän sään aikana, koska sunnuntaiksi on luvattu sadetta.

I went to see the juniper already on Saturday, while the going was good, since they have promised rain for Sunday. According to the weather station in Kumpula, the wind in Helsinki was 3 m per second from northeast, which sounded ideal. At the shore, however, the situation was different. The wind seemed brisk and blew from southwest, so in the rough sea at Uuninsuu (the sound between Uunisari and Harakka) one had to work hard while rowing. The water level is high, the sea sweepes over the pier on the mainland side. To get into the boat with dry feet , one needs rubber boots. The cliff on the island at the shore next to the bird shed, where I stand  before visiting the juniper, is partly under water. Soft splash around my feet sounded soothing, unlike the roar of the rouch sea reaching my ears across the island from the western shore.  - There is frost on the ground and the grass, but the air is not cold. No snow yet, and no hope of ice to walk on.

Ei esitystä, sataa liiaksi - No Performance, Too Much Rain

A few moments ago the weather looked promising; a soft fog above a calm sea was beautiful and would not disturb rowing nor damage the camera. But now it is really raining, the wind is rising and more water is to be expected. It will be dark before the rain stops, or perhaps Monday. So the meeting is postponed until next week!
